The furnace control board (also called the ignition control board or furnace circuit board) is the brain of your heating system. It sequences every operation — from inducer startup to ignition to blower control — and monitors safety switches throughout the cycle. When it fails, the furnace may not run at all, or may run erratically. Here's what you need to know.

What Does the Control Board Control?

The control board manages: inducer motor startup and timing, pressure switch monitoring, ignitor activation, gas valve operation, flame sensing confirmation, blower motor speed and timing, limit switch monitoring, error code generation and LED display, and communication with the thermostat. Essentially, if something happens inside your furnace, the control board is either causing it or monitoring it.

Signs of Control Board Failure

Symptom Possible Control Board Issue
No response to thermostat call Board not receiving signal or dead
Continuous fast LED flashing Board fault (Goodman code)
Random shutdowns without error code Intermittent board failure
Blower runs but burners won't fire Board not sequencing ignition
Inducer runs but ignitor never glows Board not activating ignitor circuit
Burned smell or visible burn marks on board Board component failure

How Control Boards Fail

Power surges: Voltage spikes from lightning or utility switching can damage sensitive board components. A whole-home surge protector on your HVAC disconnect reduces this risk.

Moisture or condensate: High-efficiency furnaces produce acidic condensate. If the drain system backs up or condensate leaks, it can damage the control board. See our guide on condensate drain issues.

Overheating: Repeated high-limit trips due to restricted airflow can stress board components over time. Always maintain clean filters. See our guide on furnace limit switch.

Age and component wear: Capacitors on the board dry out over time. After 15–20 years, board failure becomes increasingly likely.

Diagnosing a Failed Control Board

Control board diagnosis requires eliminating other causes first. Before assuming the board is bad, verify: the thermostat is calling for heat correctly, all safety switches (pressure switch, limit switch, rollout switch) are in normal position, the ignitor has continuity, and the gas valve is receiving power. A board is rarely the first failure point — it's usually diagnosed after other components check out. See our Goodman error code guide and furnace not turning on checklist.

Replacement Cost

OEM Goodman control board: $100–$350 depending on model. Third-party compatible boards: $50–$200. Labor: $100–$200. Total installed: $200–$550. On a furnace older than 15 years, control board failure often signals that other components are also near end of life — at this point, furnace replacement is often more economical than repair. DIY or Technician?

Control board replacement involves working with 120V power and delicate electrical connections. While the physical swap is straightforward (disconnect wires, remove board, install new board with same wiring), incorrect wiring can damage the new board or create safety hazards. This repair is generally recommended for experienced DIYers or technicians. If you're not confident with electrical work, call a pro.

Goodman Board Parts Availability

Goodman control boards are available from HVAC supply houses and online suppliers. Your model number (on the data label inside the furnace) will reference the correct board part number. See our guide on where to buy Goodman furnace parts.
