The gas valve is the component that controls the flow of natural gas or propane into your furnace burners. When it fails, your furnace either won't produce heat at all, or — in rare cases — can create a dangerous condition if it sticks open. Understanding how it works and recognizing failure signs helps you make smart repair decisions.

How a Furnace Gas Valve Works

Modern furnace gas valves (most commonly Honeywell VR series) are electromechanical devices that open when they receive a 24V signal from the furnace control board, after the board has confirmed: the inducer is running (pressure switch closed), the heat exchanger isn't overheating (limit switch closed), and the ignitor is hot (or spark is active). Only when all safety conditions are met does the control board energize the gas valve solenoid, allowing gas to flow to the burners.

On two-stage furnaces, the gas valve has two solenoids — one for low fire (65%) and one for high fire (100%). The control board energizes the appropriate solenoid based on the heating demand.

Symptoms of Gas Valve Failure

Symptom Possible Cause
No ignition — inducer runs, ignitor glows, but no flame Gas valve not opening (failed solenoid or no 24V signal)
Furnace lights then immediately shuts off Gas valve closing prematurely or flame sensor issue
Only low fire works on two-stage furnace High-fire solenoid failed
Strong gas smell with furnace off Gas valve stuck open (emergency — shut off gas)
Error code 7 (ignition lockout) after ignitor checks out Gas valve not opening — no gas to burners

Diagnosing a Suspected Gas Valve Failure

Before concluding the gas valve is bad, verify: gas supply is on and other appliances work, the ignitor is glowing properly (check it through the sight glass — it should glow orange-white), the control board is sending 24V to the gas valve terminals during an ignition attempt (requires a multimeter), and the gas valve manual knob (if present) is in the ON position. If the board is sending 24V to the valve during ignition and there's no gas flow, the valve solenoid has likely failed. See our Goodman error code guide for related fault codes.

Gas Valve Stuck Open: Emergency Action

A gas valve stuck in the open position is an emergency — gas flows to the burner area even when the furnace is off, creating explosion and CO risk. If you smell gas strongly from the furnace area when it hasn't been running, shut off the manual gas valve on the supply line to the furnace immediately, turn off the furnace power, and call a technician before operating the furnace again. Do not attempt to restart. See our guide on furnace smell guide.

Replacement Cost

A replacement gas valve for a Goodman furnace (typically Honeywell VR8200 or similar): $80–$200 for the part. Labor: $100–$200. Total: $180–$400. Gas valve replacement on a furnace under 12 years old is usually worth doing. On a furnace 15+ years old, factor in the overall equipment age and whether other components are also near end of life. DIY Considerations

Gas valve replacement involves working with gas line connections and is not a standard DIY repair. In Minnesota, gas line work typically requires a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The gas valve itself can be swapped by an experienced HVAC technician, but given the safety stakes (gas leaks), professional installation is strongly recommended.

Goodman Gas Valve Parts

Goodman furnaces use standard Honeywell and White-Rodgers gas valves available at HVAC supply houses throughout Minnesota. The specific part number is in your furnace's installation manual or can be looked up by model number. See our guide on where to buy Goodman furnace parts.
