Furnaces make sounds — that is normal. But not all furnace sounds are created equal. Some are routine operating noises while others warn of impending failure. This guide covers every common furnace noise, what causes it, and what to do about it.

Normal Furnace Sounds

Whooshing or Rushing Air

A steady whooshing when the blower runs is air moving through ductwork — completely normal. If louder than usual, check your air filter. A clogged filter increases velocity through remaining open area. Also ensure supply and return vents are open.

Soft Humming

A quiet hum from the blower motor during operation is normal. ECM variable-speed motors produce a low-frequency hum especially noticeable in basements with hard surfaces.

Click at Startup

A single click when the thermostat calls for heat is the control board relay engaging, followed by inducer motor whirring and burners firing with a soft whomp. This click-whir-whomp sequence means everything is working correctly.

Expansion Pops

Metal ductwork expands with hot air and contracts on shutdown, causing occasional popping. This is cosmetic, not a safety issue.

Warning Sounds That Need Attention

Loud Bang or Boom at Ignition

A bang when burners light is delayed ignition — gas accumulates before the igniter lights it. Causes include dirty burners, weak igniter, or slow gas valve. The repeated concussive force can crack the heat exchanger, creating carbon monoxide risk. Have burners cleaned promptly.

Squealing or Screeching

Squealing indicates bearing failure in the blower or inducer motor. Present during the whole cycle means blower bearings. Only at startup means inducer bearings. Progressive failure that worsens over weeks — the motor will eventually seize.

Grinding

Urgent — the blower wheel may be loose and scraping the housing. Shut off the furnace and inspect immediately. A loose wheel at high RPM causes significant damage.

Rattling

Loose panels or ductwork rattle from vibration — tighten screws. Rattling from inside the furnace may indicate a cracked heat exchanger, failing inducer wheel, or loose internal parts. Identify the source before dismissing it.

Repeated Clicking Without Ignition

Click-click-click without burners lighting means repeated failed ignition attempts. No igniter glow means dead igniter. Glow but no flame means gas valve not opening or gas supply interrupted.

Whistling

Whistling indicates air leaks around filter housing, duct connections, or cabinet gaps. Also caused by overly restrictive filters. Remove the filter temporarily — if whistling stops, the filter MERV rating is too high for your system.

Post-Shutdown Rumbling

Low rumbling after burners shut off means the heat exchanger is retaining combustion gases, possibly from a blocked flue or failing inducer motor. Safety concern — retained gases may contain carbon monoxide.

Sound Severity Cause Action
Whooshing Normal Airflow Check filter
Bang at startup Serious Delayed ignition Clean burners
Squealing Moderate Worn bearings Replace motor
Grinding Urgent Loose wheel Shut off now
Rattling Varies Loose parts Locate source
Whistling Low Air leak Seal gaps
Rumble after off Safety Retained gases Call tech now
