Approximately 6,100 people call Glendale home, a 1.3-square-mile municipality roughly eight miles out from central St. Louis. Nearly every home (99%) is a detached house. Median construction dates to 1951, so many Glendale houses gained central air long after they were built.
Cooling an older house properly
Retrofitted AC from decades past typically means an evaporator coil perched atop the furnace, blowing through ducts originally laid out for heat. Cold air is heavier and needs more volume, which shows up as:
- Upstairs bedrooms or converted attics staying stuffy
- Undersized return grilles that whistle or starve the blower
- Uninsulated runs through exterior walls sweating in July
Measure before you buy. A Manual J load calculation plus static-pressure readings prevent oversizing, the usual culprit behind short cycles and damp, clammy rooms.
Coil, furnace, condenser
Gas heats 83% of Glendale homes, so most new condensers mate with a gas furnace's blower. When that furnace is similarly aged, swapping both keeps airflow and coil matched. Electric-heat households (16%) might prefer heat pumps, which cover both seasons with one outdoor cabinet.
Rooms ducts never reached
Sunporches, finished third floors, and later additions frequently sit at the far end of trunk lines, or off them entirely. Rather than oversizing the central unit to compensate, consider whether a separate zone or improved branch duct suits that space better.
Old refrigerant
Freon (R-22) manufacturing stopped years ago; leaks on pre-2010 equipment rarely justify recharging.
Purchasing
Factory-direct air conditioners come from Furnace Direct, a DBA of Hamlin Mechanical LLC, with Glendale crews booked through our St. Louis hub.
