The Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage Difference in Practice

GMSS96: Single-Stage Operation

When your thermostat calls for heat, the GMSS96 fires at 100% capacity — full fire, maximum output. It heats quickly and shuts off when the thermostat is satisfied. For many Minnesota homes, especially smaller or well-insulated ones, this works perfectly well. The furnace cycles on and off as needed.

The limitation: on mild days (30–45°F outside), running at full capacity means short cycles — the furnace satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off. This can create temperature swings and more frequent start/stop cycles, which cause more wear over time.

GMVC96: Two-Stage Operation

The GMVC96 has two fire rates: approximately 65% capacity (low fire) and 100% capacity (high fire). The furnace calls low fire first. If low fire can maintain your set temperature, it stays there — running longer at lower output. Only when low fire isn't sufficient (the coldest days) does it step up to high fire.

In Minnesota's climate with its wide temperature range — from -20°F in January to 45°F in October — the GMVC96 adapts its output to match the actual demand. More consistent temperatures, quieter operation, and better long-term efficiency on the system as a whole.

The ECM Motor Advantage

The GMVC96's ECM (variable-speed) blower motor is a significant upgrade over the GMSS96's PSC motor:

  • Uses 30–60% less electricity for blower operation
  • Runs at low speed for extended periods — better air circulation and filtration
  • Maintains airflow as filters get dirty (automatically compensates)
  • Much quieter, especially at low speeds
  • Provides better humidity removal when paired with central AC (longer, lower-speed runs)

Which Is Right for Your Situation?

Choose the GMSS96 if:

  • Budget is the primary concern and you want lowest equipment cost
  • Your home is smaller (<1,500 sq ft) and well-insulated
  • You don't have central AC (humidity control is less of a factor)
  • You don't have or plan zoning
  • You're replacing a single-stage furnace and are satisfied with existing comfort

Choose the GMVC96 if:

  • Comfort consistency across all temperatures is important
  • You have or plan central AC (ECM motor improves dehumidification)
  • You have a zoned or larger home
  • You want quieter operation
  • You prefer to recoup the price difference in long-term electricity savings
  • You're in an older home that's harder to heat evenly

Our Recommendation for Most Minnesota Homes

For the majority of Minnesota homes, the GMVC96 is worth the additional investment. The two-stage operation is genuinely better suited to Minnesota's wide seasonal temperature range, the ECM motor pays back in electricity savings, and the comfort improvement is noticeable day to day. The price premium at factory-direct pricing is modest — typically $200–$400 in equipment cost.
