That sticker on your furnace door — the one with the long alphanumeric string — tells you almost everything about your furnace if you know how to read it. Whether you're shopping for a replacement, checking warranty status, ordering parts, or just trying to understand what you own, decoding your furnace model number is a valuable skill. Here's how to read it.
Why Your Model Number Matters
The furnace model number encodes the manufacturer, product family, efficiency rating, BTU capacity, cabinet configuration, and sometimes the production year. When you're buying a replacement furnace, matching your model number ensures you get a unit with the same BTU output, cabinet orientation, and venting configuration — avoiding expensive modifications during installation.
Where to Find Your Model Number
The model number sticker is almost always on one of these locations:
- Inside the furnace cabinet door (most common)
- On the side panel of the furnace cabinet
- On the blower compartment door
- On the data plate near the gas valve
You'll see both a model number (MOD or MODEL) and a serial number (SER or SERIAL). The model number identifies the product type and specs. The serial number identifies the specific unit and encodes the manufacture date.
Decoding Goodman Furnace Model Numbers
Goodman is the most widely distributed furnace brand in the US, and their model number system is fairly logical once you know the key. Here's a breakdown using the model GMVC960804CN as an example:
Common Goodman Model Families Decoded
Reading the Serial Number for Manufacture Date
The serial number tells you when your furnace was made — useful for warranty lookups and determining age. Goodman serial numbers follow this pattern:
Example: 1912345678
- First 2 digits (19) = Year of manufacture (2019)
- Next 2 digits (12) = Week of manufacture (week 12 of that year)
- Remaining digits = Production sequence number
So a serial number starting with "0823" was manufactured in the 23rd week of 2008 — meaning the furnace is about 17–18 years old. If your serial number follows a different pattern, check Goodman's website or call their support line — older units used different encoding.
Using Your Model Number to Find a Replacement
When shopping for a replacement furnace, these are the critical specs to match from your current model number:
- BTU input: The 2-digit code in positions 7–8. Don't upsize unless your home was demonstrably under-heated — most Minnesota furnaces are already oversized.
- Cabinet configuration: Upflow/horizontal (C) vs. downflow/horizontal (D). The ductwork connection points are different.
- Cabinet width: The single digit in position 10. If your replacement furnace is a different width, you'll need duct transitions — extra cost and complexity.
- Venting type: 80% AFUE furnaces use a metal flue. 96%+ AFUE units use PVC pipes (two-pipe sealed combustion). Don't replace an 80% with a 96% without planning for new venting.
A Note on Other Brands
Carrier, Lennox, Trane, and other manufacturers use different model number formats, but the logic is similar — some combination of efficiency, BTU, cabinet configuration, and blower type is encoded in the string. The manufacturer's website or a dealer can decode any specific format.
Amana — which is the same company as Goodman (both owned by Daikin) — uses a similar but slightly different model format. An Amana AMVC96 is functionally identical to a Goodman GMVC96 with different branding.
