Every furnace has a data plate — a metal or paper label typically located inside the blower compartment door or on the back panel. This label contains the model number, serial number, BTU rating, electrical requirements, and other specifications. Knowing how to read it helps you buy replacement parts, compare equipment, and verify that a contractor is quoting you the right unit.

Where to Find the Data Label

On most furnaces, the data label is located on the inside of the front access panel, inside the blower compartment, or on the side of the unit near the burner assembly. For Goodman furnaces, it's typically on the inside of the lower access door.

Decoding a Goodman Furnace Model Number

Goodman model numbers follow a structured format. Let's use GMVC960804CN as an example:

Position Characters Meaning
1 G Goodman brand
2 M Gas furnace (upflow/horizontal)
3–4 VC Variable capacity / modulating (V) with ComfortBridge (C)
5–6 96 AFUE efficiency: 96%
7–8 08 Input BTU: 80,000 BTU/hr
9–10 04 Number of heating stages / blower configuration
11 C Cabinet width (C = standard width)
12 N Natural gas

Common Model Number Prefixes

Prefix Meaning
GM Goodman gas furnace, upflow/horizontal
GD Goodman gas furnace, downflow
AM Amana gas furnace (Goodman sister brand)
GSX Goodman air conditioner, split system
DSXC Goodman heat pump, split system

Efficiency Codes in Model Numbers

The two-digit efficiency code is one of the most useful parts of any model number. Common values:

  • 80 — 80% AFUE (single-stage, non-condensing)
  • 92 — 92% AFUE (condensing)
  • 9696% AFUE (two-stage condensing, most popular)
  • 97 — 97% AFUE (modulating condensing)
  • 98 — 98% AFUE (high-efficiency modulating)

BTU Codes: What the Numbers Mean

The BTU section of the model number represents input BTU in thousands. Common codes:

  • 04 = 40,000 BTU input
  • 06 = 60,000 BTU input
  • 08 = 80,000 BTU input
  • 10 = 100,000 BTU input
  • 12 = 120,000 BTU input
  • 14 = 140,000 BTU input

Remember: input BTU is the gas consumed. Output BTU is what heats your home. A 96% efficient 80,000 BTU furnace outputs approximately 76,800 BTU of heat. See our Minnesota furnace sizing guide for help choosing the right BTU for your home.

Stage Codes

  • SS or S — Single-stage
  • VC or 2 — Two-stage
  • VM or V — Variable speed / modulating

Other Key Data Label Information

Beyond the model number, the data label contains other important specs:

Label Field What It Tells You
Serial Number Date of manufacture (usually encoded in first 4 digits: year + week)
Input BTU/HR Gas consumption rate at full fire
Output BTU/HR Actual heat output (input × efficiency)
Electrical Rating Voltage, amperage, and frequency requirements
Gas Type Natural gas (NG) or propane (LP)
Min/Max Manifold Pressure Required gas pressure for proper operation
Temperature Rise Range Required delta between return and supply air (critical for airflow setup)
Blower Motor HP Motor size for replacement

Reading a Serial Number for Age

Goodman encodes the manufacture date in the serial number. The first four digits typically represent the year and week of manufacture. For example, serial number 2103XXXXXX was made in 2021, week 3 (mid-January 2021). This is useful when buying a used furnace or verifying warranty status.

Using the Model Number to Buy Parts

When ordering replacement parts — ignitors, control boards, pressure switches, capacitors, or motors — you need the exact model and serial number. Even small differences in the model number can mean different parts. Always take a photo of the data label before calling a parts supplier.
