A new furnace or air conditioner is a significant expense — typically $2,500–$8,000 for equipment and installation combined. Most homeowners don't have that sitting in savings, especially when the need is urgent (mid-winter furnace failure). Understanding your financing options helps you make a fast, financially sound decision.

1. Manufacturer and Distributor Financing

Some HVAC manufacturers and distributors offer promotional financing — typically 0% APR for 12–18 months with approved credit. This is often the best deal available if you qualify: you pay nothing extra, you spread the cost over time, and the payments are predictable.

Furnace Direct periodically offers financing options on qualifying orders. Contact us directly to check current availability. These offers change seasonally and are subject to credit approval.

2. HVAC Contractor Financing

Most HVAC contractors offer financing through third-party lenders (GreenSky, Wells Fargo, Synchrony, etc.). Common structures: 0% APR for 12–18 months (deferred interest — read the fine print, because full interest may apply retroactively if not paid in full), fixed-rate installment loans at competitive rates, and same-as-cash options.

Contractor financing is convenient but comes with the equipment markup built in. If you've bought equipment separately through Furnace Direct at wholesale pricing, ask your installing contractor if they can also arrange financing for the installation portion.

3. Personal Loan

A personal loan from a bank, credit union, or online lender can fund HVAC purchases. Rates for creditworthy borrowers typically run 7–15% APR for 24–60 month terms. Advantages: flexible, not tied to a specific contractor, allows you to shop equipment and labor separately. Minnesota credit unions (Wings Financial, TruStone, Affinity Plus) often have competitive personal loan rates for members.

4. Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) or Home Equity Loan

For homeowners with equity, a HELOC or home equity loan provides access to funds at mortgage-adjacent rates (currently 7–9% APR range). Interest on home equity loans used for home improvements may be tax-deductible — consult a tax advisor. The process takes longer than a personal loan (appraisal, underwriting), making it more suitable for planned replacements than emergency situations.

5. Utility On-Bill Financing

Some Minnesota utilities offer on-bill financing for energy efficiency upgrades — the loan is repaid through your monthly utility bill. CenterPoint Energy and some municipal utilities have offered programs like this. These programs are specifically designed for HVAC equipment and often have lower credit requirements than traditional loans. Check your utility's website or call their energy efficiency line.

6. Credit Card (With a Plan)

A 0% APR introductory credit card can work well for HVAC financing if you can pay it off before the promotional period ends. Cards with 15–21 month 0% periods are available for good credit applicants. The risk: if you carry a balance past the promotional period, standard credit card rates (18–28% APR) apply to the remaining balance.

The Total Cost Math

The biggest variable in your total HVAC cost isn't financing — it's equipment cost. Buying a Goodman furnace through Furnace Direct at factory-direct wholesale pricing saves $500–$1,500 vs. contractor-supplied equipment, before any financing considerations. Even at 8% APR on a personal loan, the lower starting cost from factory-direct buying produces lower total payments than contractor pricing at 0% APR on a higher amount.

Example: $1,200 furnace from Furnace Direct + $1,000 installation = $2,200 financed at 8% APR for 24 months = $100/month. $2,800 contractor-supplied furnace + $1,000 installation = $3,800 at "0% APR" for 24 months = $158/month. The "free financing" option costs $58 more per month because the equipment cost was higher.
