Kansas City, Missouri covers almost 315 square miles and the Census geocoder places its center in Jackson County. Roughly 516,000 people live in about 222,200 occupied homes. With that much territory, replacing heat in a 1920s foursquare and one in a 1990s cul-de-sac subdivision are two very different projects, even if the equipment tag reads the same.
Five questions that decide the size of the job
- How old is the house? The median year built citywide is 1969. Homes near or before that line often have galvanized ducts, a shared metal or masonry flue, and basement wiring that predates modern controls.
- Gas or electric? About 68% of households heat with piped gas, and 30% with electricity. Gas owners typically replace a furnace; all-electric owners usually compare a heat pump with an air handler.
- Single-family or multi-unit? 62% of homes are detached; one in five units is in a building with ten-plus apartments, where mechanical space and roof or balcony access govern what fits.
- Is the AC staying? An outdoor condenser older than the furnace is often swapped at the same visit so the coil and refrigerant match.
- Condensing or standard efficiency? A 90%-plus furnace needs PVC venting and a drain; an 80% model reuses a flue, which may need a liner.
Who does the work
Furnace Direct, a DBA of Hamlin Mechanical LLC, sells factory-direct and runs turn-key installs out of our Kansas City hub, reaching neighborhoods on both sides of the state line.
When to replace
Plains winters swing hard. Deal with an aging heat exchanger in fall ahead of the deep cold, or in spring once demand cools off.
