Lino Lakes and Circle Pines are north Anoka County communities sitting between Blaine and the outer exurban boundary of the metro. Lino Lakes is a larger, predominantly newer suburb with significant development from the 1990s–2010s. Circle Pines is a small, dense community with mostly mid-century housing that was developed as an intentional cooperative community in the 1940s–1950s. Together they represent the diversity of the north metro's heating market — from first-time replacements in newer Lino Lakes homes to deep-vintage replacements in Circle Pines.

Lino Lakes: Newer Outer North Suburb

Lino Lakes has grown steadily since the 1990s — its larger lot sizes, wooded character, and lower density have attracted homeowners seeking more space while maintaining highway access to the metro. Key characteristics:

Predominantly 1990s–2010s construction: Most Lino Lakes homes are now 15–30 years old — squarely in the primary replacement window for original furnaces. Homes built in the late 1990s with builder-grade 80% AFUE equipment are now approaching the end of that equipment's design life.

Larger homes on wooded lots: Lino Lakes' character favors larger homes (1,800–3,000 sq ft) on lots with mature tree cover. The wooded setting provides meaningful windbreak compared to open-terrain outer suburbs, potentially reducing heating loads slightly. However, shaded lots with less solar gain in winter may offset this benefit. The Goodman GMEC96 or GMVC96 is appropriate for most Lino Lakes homes.

Rice Creek and Carlos Avery proximity: Northern Lino Lakes borders Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area — truly rural terrain with minimal heat island effect. Homes in the far north sections of the city should plan for colder design temperatures, approaching -20°F to -25°F.

Circle Pines: Compact Mid-Century Community

Circle Pines is one of Minnesota's most distinctive planned communities — originally developed by a cooperative housing organization in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The city's housing is almost entirely compact mid-century homes in the 900–1,400 sq ft range, laid out in a distinctive circular street pattern that gives the community its name.

Circle Pines heating considerations:

  • Small, compact homes need 60,000–80,000 BTU output — don't oversize
  • Many homes have original or early-replacement ductwork from the 1950s–1980s
  • Dense development with minimal lot spacing provides some wind protection
  • Second or third furnace replacement cycle for many homes

The Goodman GMSS96 in 60,000 or 80,000 BTU is well-matched to most Circle Pines homes. See our sizing guide for how to verify the right BTU output.

North Anoka County Climate

Both communities sit in north Anoka County — far enough from the metro core to experience noticeably colder temperatures than the urban center. The area is flat and open in places, providing wind exposure from the north and northwest during polar vortex events. Design temperatures of -15°F to -20°F are appropriate for sizing calculations. Goodman Equipment Summary

Circle Pines homes (900–1,400 sq ft): GMSS96 at 60,000–80,000 BTU. Straightforward, right-sized, efficient.

Typical Lino Lakes homes (1,600–2,400 sq ft): GMEC96 two-stage ECM. Two-stage handles the range of north metro heating conditions efficiently, and the ECM motor saves electricity through the long Anoka County heating season.

Larger Lino Lakes homes (2,400+ sq ft): GMVC96 variable-speed. See the full model comparison.
