Merriam sits along I-35 in northeast Johnson County, with 11,100 or so residents on 4.3 square miles, about ten miles southwest of KC's core. Housing is mixed: 60% stand-alone, 17% big apartment buildings, half built before 1970.
Heat pump, furnace, or both?
Among roughly 5,300 Merriam households, 71% are on utility gas and 26% electric. That split shapes the answer.
Homes on gas today
Swapping in a new furnace is still easiest. But if the AC is also due, a dual-fuel pairing is worth pricing: an outdoor heat-pump unit replaces the AC and heats through mild weather, and the furnace takes over below a set outdoor temperature. Kansas City winters have long stretches in the 30s and 40s where a heat pump is efficient.
Homes on electric today
Many of these are apartments or older homes with an electric furnace. Compressor-based heat through a matched air handler uses far less electricity than resistance coils, which stay as backup for bitter days.
1970 houses: things to check
- Ducts sized for heating only may limit how much air a heat pump can move.
- A 100-amp panel may need room for new breakers.
- Split-level layouts often have one level noticeably warmer or colder; zoning or a variable-speed blower helps.
