Parkville is one of the newer-built corners of the Kansas City area. This Platte County city of about 8,400 people, around ten miles northwest of downtown KC, has a median home built in 2002, and about three-quarters of its homes are detached houses. Many of those were built with central air from day one, which means a lot of original condensers are now well into their second decade.
Is your air conditioner on borrowed time?
A system installed alongside a 2000s house was likely charged with R-22 or an early R-410A. R-22 is no longer produced, so a leak on an older unit can make repair impractical. Common signs that replacement makes more sense than another service call:
- Upstairs bedrooms several degrees warmer than the main floor
- Refrigerant top-offs more than once
- A noisy or failing outdoor fan motor and compressor
- Rising summer electric bills with no change in usage
Matching the indoor side
In Parkville most homes (77%) heat with gas, so the new AC condenser pairs with a coil sitting on top of a gas furnace. If the furnace is the same age, replacing both together keeps the blower and coil matched. Homes in the electric-heat minority (about 23%) might look at a heat pump instead, which cools and heats from one outdoor unit.
Hillside lots
Parkville's terrain along the Missouri River bluffs means some condensers sit on slopes or decks. Make sure the pad is level and the line set length is accounted for in sizing.

Picking a contractor and a season
Get a load calculation rather than a same-size swap; insulation and window upgrades since 2002 can change the right tonnage. Spring, before Memorial Day, and early fall are the easiest times to book.
