Walkertown, in eastern Forsyth County about 15 miles north of High Point, is home to roughly 5,900 people. Its housing skews newer than much of the Triad, with a median build year of 1995, and 81% of residences are detached houses. Heating is mixed: electricity serves 68% of households, natural gas 20%, and fuel oil a notable 8%, with propane making up the remainder.
Three fuels, three kinds of projects
Electric homes
Most mid-1990s houses here were built with a heat pump or an electric furnace plus central air. Replacement usually means a new outdoor unit and matched air handler. Going from resistance heat to a heat pump can require a larger electrical circuit or new line set.
Gas households
One home in five has gas service. Swapping a gas furnace is often simplest in a crawlspace or basement with an existing flue; switching to a condensing model adds PVC venting and a drain.
Oil-heated houses
That 8% oil share is unusual for the area. Owners leaving oil behind face tank removal or abandonment, plus a choice between gas (if a main is nearby), propane, or a heat pump. Those decisions add steps.
Other items that move scope
- Crawlspace duct condition and insulation
- Whether the AC coil is replaced at the same visit
- Thermostat wiring for dual-fuel or staged equipment
- Attic access for upstairs air handlers in two-story homes
Who sells it
Furnace Direct, a DBA of Hamlin Mechanical LLC, supplies furnaces, heat pumps, and air handlers at factory-direct cost. Through our High Point hub, a licensed Triad installer handles setup.
Getting comparable quotes
Name your fuel plan first; an oil-to-heat-pump conversion and a gas-for-gas swap aren't comparable bids. Ask each contractor about permits, tank work, and disposal.
When to act
A 1990s original system is near the end of a normal lifespan. Shoulder seasons, March through May and September through November, are easiest to schedule.
