Wilton, population around 600, packs its homes onto barely half a square mile about 24 miles north of Bismarck. The Census geocoder places the town center in McLean County. Unlike the surrounding farmland, Wilton is a gas town: roughly 72% of its 290 or so households burn natural gas for heat, a quarter use electricity, and just 3% use propane.
Does a heat pump pay off with gas available?
When piped gas reaches your house, a high-efficiency gas furnace remains the straightforward choice for brutal winters. A heat pump earns its keep in two cases:
- You also need new central air. A heat pump replaces the AC and heats during spring and fall, with the gas furnace handling deep cold (dual-fuel).
- Your home is one of the electric-heated ones. Replacing baseboards or an electric furnace with a cold-climate heat pump plus strip backup can cut electric use substantially in mild weather.
House stock
The median Wilton home was built in 1973, and 81% are detached houses. Many still have original ductwork. Some 1970s furnaces vent through a brick chimney; a condensing replacement vents through the wall with PVC instead. About 12% of homes are in larger apartment buildings, where heat is usually the owner's responsibility.
Cold-climate considerations
Snow drifts can bury outdoor units and sidewall vents. Mount the condenser on a raised stand and keep exhaust terminations above typical snow depth.
