Ductwork is easy to forget about. It's hidden in the attic, above ceilings, or in walls, and most homeowners don't think about it until something feels wrong. In Southwest Florida, though, ducts face some of the toughest conditions in the country: hot attics, high humidity, and years of nonstop cooling. When ductwork starts to fail, it can waste energy, hurt comfort, and add humidity to the home. Here's how to tell whether your ducts in Cape Coral, Fort Myers, or Naples might need repair or replacement.

Why ducts wear out in Florida

  • Hot attics. Attics here regularly get very hot in summer. Years of heat can break down flexible duct jackets, tape, and connections.
  • Humidity. Cold ducts in a hot, humid attic can sweat if insulation is thin or damaged. Moisture can lead to stains, mold, and rot.
  • Age. Many homes in the area have original ductwork that's been in place for decades.
  • Pests and storms. Rodents can chew ducts, and roof leaks after storms can soak insulation.
  • Poor original installation. Long, sagging, or kinked flex runs restrict airflow from day one.

Signs your ducts may need attention

Some rooms never get comfortable

If one bedroom is always warm while others are fine, a disconnected, crushed, or undersized duct may be the cause.

Weak airflow from vents

Low airflow at certain vents can point to a leak or blockage in that run.

Higher bills without explanation

Leaky supply ducts dump cooled air into the attic. Leaky returns pull hot, humid attic air into the system. Either can make your AC run longer.

More humidity or dust

Return leaks pull in attic air, dust, and insulation particles. If your home feels stickier than it should or dust builds up fast, ducts are worth checking. Our guide on choosing a dehumidifier covers humidity from the other side.

Sweating, stains, or mold

Water stains on ceilings near vents, sweating supply boots, or visible mold around registers can mean ducts are poorly insulated or leaking.

Visible damage in the attic

If you can safely look, check for torn jackets, disconnected sections, flattened runs, or ducts lying in wet insulation.

Repair or replace?

Not every duct problem means replacing the whole system.

When repair may be enough

  • A few disconnected or damaged sections
  • Leaky joints that can be sealed with mastic or approved tape
  • A crushed run that can be replaced on its own
  • Insulation that's damaged in a small area

When replacement may make more sense

  • The ducts are old and deteriorating throughout
  • There's widespread leakage or poor insulation
  • The layout was undersized or poorly designed from the start
  • There's significant mold or water damage
  • You're replacing the AC and the new system's airflow needs differ from what the old ducts can deliver

Testing ducts instead of guessing

A contractor can test duct leakage using specialized equipment that pressurizes the duct system and measures how much air escapes. Static pressure readings at the air handler can also show whether ducts are restricting airflow. These tests give real numbers so you're not guessing.

Replacing ducts at the same time as the AC

If your AC is near the end of its life, it can make sense to look at the ducts at the same time. A new high-efficiency system connected to leaky, undersized ducts may not perform as rated. Variable-speed systems especially depend on the duct system to deliver air properly. Our guide on what to order with a new central AC and on choosing a new AC both touch on this.

The same goes for the air handler. If it's older and the ducts are being replaced anyway, see our guide on air handler replacement cost.

What a duct replacement involves

  1. Inspection and measurement. Looking at the existing layout, room sizes, and airflow needs.
  2. Design. Sizing supply and return ducts for the system and the rooms they serve.
  3. Removal. Taking out old ducts and disposing of them.
  4. Installation. Installing new ducts with proper support, sealing, and insulation.
  5. Testing. Checking airflow and, where required or requested, leakage.

Cost depends on the size of the home, attic access, the number of runs, and whether the work is combined with an AC replacement. Pricing varies widely, so get a written scope. A permit may be required depending on the work and location.

What you can do now

  • Change your filter regularly. A clogged filter strains everything downstream.
  • Keep supply and return vents open and unblocked.
  • Look for stains or sweating around vents and note which rooms are uncomfortable.
  • If you're in the attic for other reasons, take photos of the ducts. Photos help a contractor give advice. See how to get a quote with photos.

FAQ

How long do ducts last in Florida?
It varies with material, installation quality, and attic conditions. Flex duct in hot attics often shows wear sooner than well-installed metal duct. An inspection is the best way to know.

Can leaky ducts cause humidity problems?
Yes. Return leaks can pull humid attic air into the system.

Should I replace ducts when I replace my AC?
Not always, but it's a good time to inspect them. Poor ducts can limit how well a new system performs.

Is duct cleaning the same as duct replacement?
No. Cleaning removes dust and debris. It doesn't fix leaks, poor insulation, or damage.
