AC Repair in Naples, FL: What to Check Before You Call

When your AC acts up in Naples, the urge is to call someone right away. Sometimes that's exactly the right move. But a few quick checks can save you a service call, help the technician diagnose the problem faster, or tell you that it's time to shut the system off and wait.

This guide is written for Naples homes, from older ranch houses in East Naples to condos near the Gulf and seasonal homes in golf communities. The basics are the same everywhere, but a few local issues come up often.

Safety first

If you smell burning, see smoke, hear loud grinding or screeching, or notice scorched wiring, turn the system off at the thermostat and leave it off. Don't open the outdoor unit or the air handler. Capacitors can hold a charge even with the power off. If water is coming through a ceiling, turn the system off and keep people out from under the wet area.

1. Check the thermostat

Make sure it's set to Cool, the set temperature is below the room temperature, and the fan is on Auto. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank or dim. If you have a smart thermostat, look for a schedule, an "away" setting, or a remote change from an app.

Naples-specific: Seasonal homes are often set to a higher temperature or a humidity setting while the owners are away. When you come back for the season, double-check that the thermostat and any humidity controls are set for normal living.

2. Check the breakers and disconnect

Most central systems have two breakers in the panel, one for the outdoor unit and one for the indoor air handler. If one is tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call. Also check the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit to make sure it hasn't been pulled or switched off.

3. Check the air filter

A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of weak cooling and frozen coils. If the filter is gray and packed, replace it. If you see ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil, switch the system to Off, set the fan to On, and let it melt before calling. Running a frozen system in Cool can make the damage worse.

Checked the basics and still not sure what's going on? Have a specialist call you.

4. Check the drain line and float switch

Naples humidity means your AC pulls a lot of water out of the air. Algae can clog the condensate drain, and many systems have a float switch that turns the AC off when water backs up. Look at the air handler (in a closet, garage, or attic) for standing water in the pan or a tripped switch. Our guide on how to clean an AC drain line in Florida walks through clearing it.

Condo note: In many Naples condos, the air handler is in a small closet and the drain ties into a shared line. A backup can affect neighbors below, so if you see water, turn the system off and call promptly.

5. Look at the outdoor unit

Is the fan spinning? Is the unit humming but the fan isn't turning? Is it silent? Is it covered with leaves or grass clippings? Clear debris from around it, but don't reach inside. A humming unit with a stopped fan often points to a capacitor or motor problem. Our guide on AC capacitor replacement explains why that part fails so often in Florida heat.

Coastal note: Units close to the Gulf or on the water see salt corrosion on the coil and electrical connections. Rust, crumbling fins, or corroded wiring are worth mentioning when you call.

6. Check vents and returns

Make sure supply vents are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Check that the return grille isn't covered. Closing too many vents doesn't save energy and can cause the coil to freeze.

7. Be realistic about extreme heat

On a 95-degree afternoon, many systems can only keep the house roughly 15 to 20 degrees below the outdoor temperature. If the house is 78 and holding steady at 4 p.m. in August, the system may be working normally. If it's 85 and climbing, that's a problem.

Wondering if it's worth repairing an older system or time to look at replacement? Request a call.

When to call right away

  • A breaker trips more than once
  • Burning smell, smoke, or scorched wiring
  • Loud grinding, screeching, or banging
  • Water leaking into a ceiling or a neighbor's unit
  • Ice that comes back after you've thawed the system and replaced the filter
  • The outdoor unit is silent or humming with no fan movement
  • Someone in the home is vulnerable to heat

What to tell the technician

  • What happened and when (sudden stop, slowly getting worse, blowing warm)
  • Whether a breaker tripped and what happened when you reset it
  • Whether you saw water, ice, or a tripped float switch
  • What the outdoor unit is doing
  • The model and serial number from the outdoor unit's label (a photo works)
  • The system's approximate age

Repair or replace?

Many calls end with a simple fix: a capacitor, a contactor, a clogged drain. But if your system is older, uses R-22, or has needed several major repairs, it's worth comparing repair cost with replacement. Our AC replacement cost guide for Naples covers what affects price, and repair-or-replace math for a failed compressor walks through one of the biggest decisions.

FAQ

Why is my AC running but not cooling?
Common causes include a dirty filter, a frozen coil, a failed capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, or a dirty outdoor coil. Our AC not cooling troubleshooting guide goes deeper.

How often should I service my AC in Naples?
At least once a year, ideally in spring. Coastal homes benefit from more frequent outdoor coil rinsing.

What should I do with my AC when I leave for the summer?
Don't turn it off completely. Many seasonal residents set a higher temperature or use humidity control to keep moisture and mold in check. Ask a technician what makes sense for your home.

Is it normal for my AC to run all day in summer?
On very hot days, long run times can be normal. Watch whether the house holds a reasonable temperature.
