Independence is the largest suburb on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro: about 121,700 people across 78 square miles in Jackson County, roughly 11 miles east of downtown KC. A few blocks near the historic Square date back more than a century, though most construction followed World War II, putting the citywide midpoint at 1967. Seven in ten dwellings stand alone, roughly 11% belong to big complexes, and 3% are mobile homes.

What a 1960s ranch needs from a new AC

Many Independence ranches gained air conditioning years after construction. The coil sits on the furnace, the return is often a single grille in a hallway, and supply ducts may be smaller than ideal for cooling. Before replacing anything, a technician should check total static pressure; bolting a fresh outdoor AC onto choked ductwork just produces a noisy unit that dies young.

Four common Independence scenarios

Of 51,500 households citywide, 77% burn utility gas and about 20% rely on electric resistance or heat pumps.

  1. Gas furnace in decent shape: swap condenser and coil together, rated as one system.
  2. Gas furnace over 20 years: do the furnace too, so the blower and coil are designed to work together.
  3. Electric furnace or baseboard: look at heat-pump systems, which cool in summer and carry most winter heating.
  4. Mobile homes: equipment must be listed for manufactured housing.

Brick, trees, and placement

Older neighborhoods have mature trees. Keep the outdoor unit clear of falling leaves and cottonwood fluff, which clog coils in late spring.
