ERV Installation in Minnesota — Energy Recovery Ventilators

An ERV brings in fresh air while recovering both heat and a portion of the moisture — the right call for very tight, newer Minnesota homes that get uncomfortably dry in winter. Furnace Direct installs and replaces ERVs across Minnesota.

When an ERV is the better choice

Most Minnesota homes do best with an HRV. But there's a real group that doesn't: very tightly-built newer homes, and homes where the winter air already runs too dry and static-shocky. In those, an HRV can over-dry the house. An ERV's core transfers heat and a share of the moisture, so it retains more indoor humidity in winter while still delivering fresh air. We'll be straight with you about which one your home actually needs — we install both.

ERV vs HRV, plainly

ERV — heat + moisture

Holds more humidity indoors during winter. Best for very tight or new construction, or homes that feel parched in the heating season.

HRV — heat only

Vents excess humidity out. Best for the typical Minnesota home dealing with window condensation and stuffy winter air.

You probably need one (or a replacement) if:
  • Windows fog up or drip with condensation in winter
  • The house feels stuffy, or cooking and pet odors linger
  • Indoor humidity feels high in winter or the air feels stale
  • Your current air exchanger is old, noisy, or the core is shot
  • You just tightened the house up (new windows, insulation, spray foam) and comfort got worse
