AFUE Ratings Explained: How to Read Furnace Efficiency in Minnesota
When shopping for a furnace, you'll see an AFUE rating prominently displayed. Understanding AFUE helps you calculate real operating costs and compare models accurately before buying.
What AFUE Means
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. It measures what percentage of fuel consumed actually becomes heat in your home. An 80% AFUE furnace converts 80 cents of every dollar of gas into heat—the other 20 cents escapes as exhaust. A 96% AFUE furnace keeps 96 cents on the dollar.
AFUE Tiers and What They Cost to Run
80% AFUE (standard efficiency): Lower upfront cost, higher operating cost. Vents through traditional flue pipe. 92–96% AFUE (high efficiency): Higher upfront cost, significantly lower gas bills. Uses PVC condensate venting. 97–98% AFUE (ultra-high efficiency): Marginal gains over 96% but much higher price premium.
Minnesota's Case for High-Efficiency Furnaces
Minnesota homeowners run furnaces 6–7 months per year. At current gas prices, upgrading from 80% to 96% AFUE saves $300–$600 annually on heating costs in a typical MN home. Payback on the efficiency premium is typically 3–5 years.
