Buying a new furnace comes with a warranty — but that warranty is only as good as your registration. For Goodman furnaces, the difference between a registered and unregistered warranty is significant. Many homeowners don't know this distinction exists until they need to file a claim. Here's everything you need to know.
Registered vs. Unregistered Goodman Warranty
| Coverage | Registered (within 60 days) | Unregistered / Late |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exchanger | Lifetime | 20 years |
| Parts | 10 years | 5 years |
| Labor (manufacturer) | None standard | None |
Registration doubles the parts warranty from 5 to 10 years and upgrades the heat exchanger warranty from 20 years to lifetime. This is a substantial difference — a failed control board, gas valve, or heat exchanger at year 8 could cost $400–$1,500 in parts. Registered = free (parts only). Unregistered = you pay.
The 60-Day Window
Goodman requires registration within 60 days of installation to receive the enhanced warranty terms. This is a hard deadline — there's no grace period extension, and late registration locks you into the shorter warranty terms permanently.
Make registration the first thing you do after installation is complete. It takes 5 minutes.
How to Register Your Goodman Furnace
Online Registration (Recommended)
- Go to goodmanmfg.com
- Navigate to "Homeowners" → "Register Your Product"
- Enter your furnace model number and serial number (from the data label inside the access door)
- Enter installation date and your contact information
- Submit and save the confirmation
What You'll Need
- Model number (example: GMVC960804CN)
- Serial number (10–12 character alphanumeric code)
- Installation date
- Your name, address, and contact information
- Installer's name (optional but helpful)
Should Your Contractor Register It?
Some contractors include warranty registration as part of their installation service. Ask specifically whether they register it — and if so, ask for confirmation that it was done. Even if they say they'll handle it, register it yourself as a backup. The cost of forgetting is too high.
With factory-direct purchases through Furnace Direct, we always remind customers to register — but the registration must be completed by the homeowner or installer using the unit's specific serial number after installation.
What the Warranty Covers (and What It Doesn't)
Covered:
- Defective parts — heat exchanger, gas valve, control board, blower motor, capacitors, pressure switches, etc.
- Manufacturing defects discovered during the warranty period
Not covered:
- Labor to install replacement parts (this is a common source of confusion — you get the part for free, but pay a technician to install it)
- Damage from improper installation, improper maintenance, or misuse
- Damage from floods, fires, lightning, or other acts of nature
- Normal wear on consumable items (filters, UV bulbs, humidifier pads)
- Failures due to lack of maintenance (clogged coils, dirty filters causing overheating)
- Equipment converted between gas types without factory-approved conversion kit
Filing a Warranty Claim
If a covered part fails within the warranty period:
- Have a licensed HVAC technician diagnose the failure and confirm the failed part number
- The technician contacts their HVAC distributor (Johnstone Supply, Winsupply, etc.) with the claim
- The distributor processes the warranty claim with Goodman/Daikin
- A replacement part is provided at no charge
- You pay the technician's labor to install the replacement part
Keep your registration confirmation and installation documentation — you may need to provide proof of installation date during the claim process. See our complete Goodman warranty guide for more detail.
