Why Licensing Matters for Furnace Installation
A gas furnace involves natural gas lines, combustion, venting, and electrical connections. An improperly installed furnace can leak gas, produce carbon monoxide, or fail in ways that endanger your family. Minnesota has licensing requirements to ensure the people doing this work are qualified. Knowing what to look for protects you legally, financially, and physically.
Minnesota Mechanical Contractor License
For furnace installation, the key credential is the Mechanical Contractor License, administered by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). This is the company-level license required for HVAC work. Note: a licensed plumber is not automatically licensed for HVAC mechanical work—make sure the company doing your installation holds a mechanical contractor license specifically.
Individual Certifications
Beyond the company license, individuals performing the work need qualifications: Apprentices work under direct supervision; Journeyworkers can work independently (requires documented apprenticeship hours and state exam); Masters are required to pull permits and supervise apprentices—mechanical contractors must have a licensed master on staff.
The Permit Requirement
In virtually all Minnesota jurisdictions, furnace installation requires a mechanical permit pulled before work begins. The permit authorizes the work, requires a licensed mechanical contractor, triggers a code compliance inspection, and creates a public record. If a contractor says "we don't need a permit"—that's a serious red flag. Unpermitted work can void your homeowner's insurance after a CO incident, create resale problems, and void your Goodman warranty.
How to Verify a Minnesota HVAC Contractor
The Minnesota DLI maintains a public license lookup at dli.mn.gov—search by contractor name or license number. Look for active license status, mechanical contractor license type, and any disciplinary actions. Ask directly for the mechanical contractor license number. A legitimate contractor provides it without hesitation.
Insurance Requirements
Contractors should carry general liability insurance (covers property damage during work) and workers' compensation insurance (covers their employees if injured on your property—without it, you could be liable under Minnesota law). Ask for certificates of insurance (COI) showing current coverage—don't accept verbal assurance.
What to Ask Before Hiring
- What is your Minnesota mechanical contractor license number? (Verify at dli.mn.gov)
- Will you pull the required mechanical permit before work begins?
- Can you provide certificates of general liability and workers' comp insurance?
- Will installation include commissioning measurements—combustion analysis, static pressure, temperature rise?
Red Flags When Hiring
Cannot provide a license number; claims permits aren't required; requests full payment before any work; price far below all other bids without explanation; no written contract with specific equipment model numbers; poor BBB or Google reviews with unresolved complaints.
The Furnace Direct Model
When you source your Goodman furnace through Furnace Direct, you purchase the equipment directly and hire a licensed HVAC contractor for installation only—giving you full control over who installs it. You can independently verify licensing, check reviews, and get installation-only quotes from multiple contractors. Savings are typically $500-$1,500 on the equipment side compared to buying through a contractor.
