North Dakota HVAC Cost Guides by City
North Dakota had 784,841 residents and 331,063 occupied homes in the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates. Half of those homes were built before 1982, 57% are single-family detached houses, and the heating fuel split is 41% utility gas, 40% electricity and 13% bottled gas or propane. North Dakota's share of homes heated with bottled gas or propane is the highest of any state we cover, Fuel type affects which furnaces fit and what venting and fuel work an install needs.
This hub lists every North Dakota city guide we have published, mostly around Bismarck–Mandan. The guides cover furnace installation cost, furnace selection, AC sizing and heat pump versus furnace questions. Each uses the city's own Census figures. In a state with long heating seasons, efficiency and correct sizing matter more than in milder markets, so read the sizing sections of each guide before comparing quotes.
For Bismarck labor rates, energy prices and degree-day data, see the Bismarck HVAC cost stats page. For a side-by-side view of every metro we cover, use the HVAC Cost Stats by Metro (2026). If you are comparing North Dakota with Minnesota, the Minnesota hub lists those city guides.
How to read the numbers
The figures on this page and in every linked guide come from Census survey tables. Median year built (table B25035) is the year by which half of the homes standing today had been built. In North Dakota that year is 1982, so a typical home is old enough that its original furnace, air conditioner or ductwork may already have been replaced. House heating fuel (table B25040) counts occupied homes by their main heating fuel. It shows whether a city is mostly gas, electric or propane, and that decides which equipment types fit without fuel or venting changes. Every estimate has a margin of error, which is wider for small towns, so treat small-city figures as a guide rather than an exact count.
