North Carolina HVAC Cost Guides by City

North Carolina had 10,730,404 residents and 4,282,345 occupied homes in the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates. Half of those homes were built before 1991, 65% are single-family detached houses, and the heating fuel split is 24% utility gas, 65% electricity and 6% bottled gas or propane. Unlike the Midwest states we cover, electricity heats more North Carolina homes than gas does, so heat pumps are the default comparison in many of our guides there. Homes are also newer than in the Midwest states we cover.

This hub lists every North Carolina city guide we have published, mostly around the Piedmont Triad. The guides cover furnace installation cost, AC replacement and heat pump versus furnace decisions, and each one uses the city's own Census housing figures rather than statewide averages. Use the city closest to you as a starting point, then compare its home age and fuel mix with the statewide numbers above. Newer homes with existing heat pumps usually have simpler replacements than older houses switching fuels.

For labor rates, energy prices and climate in the Triad, see the High Point HVAC cost stats page and the HVAC Cost Stats by Metro (2026), which compares every metro we cover side by side.

How to read the numbers

The figures on this page and in every linked guide come from Census survey tables. Median year built (table B25035) is the year by which half of the homes standing today had been built. In North Carolina that year is 1991, so a typical home is old enough that its original furnace, air conditioner or ductwork may already have been replaced. House heating fuel (table B25040) counts occupied homes by their main heating fuel. It shows whether a city is mostly gas, electric or propane, and that decides which equipment types fit without fuel or venting changes. Every estimate has a margin of error, which is wider for small towns, so treat small-city figures as a guide rather than an exact count.
